Title: Victory over the Sun. First New York Performance
Description: Brooklyn: Brooklyn Academy of Music, 1983. Poster, 28 x 22 inches. Next Wave series. Some wrinkling. From the New York Times: By HARLOW ROBINSON Published: November 20, 1983 When the opera ''Victory Over the Sun'' received its first performance in St. Petersburg in 1913, the city's artistic elite buzzed with excitement. Tickets were sold out in a day. One drama critic in attendance later noted: ''Scandal lovers from the St. Petersburg demimonde were willing to pay enormous amounts of money just to get into the theater.'' When ''Victory Over the Sun'' returned to the stage 67 years later, in 1980 in Los Angeles, the public demonstrated the same sort of wild enthusiasm. One ticketless woman, in a gesture that would have delighted the opera's eccentric creators, is said to have bitten a security guard's finger when he refused to let her into the theater. On Friday, New Yorkers will have their first opportunity to see ''Victory Over the Sun,'' at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, where it is being staged as part of the Next Wave Festival of Contemporary Performance. From the collection of the Russian theater historian, Alma Law. .
