Sir William Rothenstein, British painter; one of a group of progressive artists trained at the Slade, and influenced by impressionism; painted portraits, landscapes and subject pictures; published several sets of lithographs of famous men of the time; an influential teacher and spokesman for the arts; published his reminiscences. Professor of Civic Art, University of Sheffield, 1917-26; Principal of the Royal College of Art, 1920-35. From a collection of letters and papers amassed by illustrator and painter Robinson during his years as a publisher with Rockliff, John Baker, Maclaren and others.
