SCIENCE FICTION PLUS: Preview of the Future, October 1953. Vol. 1, No. 6.New York: Gernsback Publications, Inc., 1953. First printing. The last of Gernsback's publications, this was designed as a full-size magazine (11 1/8 by 8 1/2 inches) as a sign that science fiction had come of age. This issue is notable for an excellent long and early story by Philip Jose Farmer - 'Strange Compulsion' - which preceded his first book appearance by several years (with striking illustrations by Virgil Finlay), and especially for Anne McCaffrey's first published story, a short-short entitled 'Freedom of the Race'. SIGNED by MccCaffrey at her story, and very uncommon thus. Cover art by Frank R. Paul. 66 pp. Very good (some minor wear to the spine, light creasing to the cover, and usual toning to the pages, but still a quite attractive copy).
