Includes several chapters on mining and the early mining history of the area, on the railroad, wagon roads, towns, on the crimimal record (which includes a long account of the notorious outlaw Richard Barter, alias 'Rattlesnake Dick'), on agriculture, and on destruction by fire, on journalism, churches and societies, and one chapter devoted to reminiscences of Illinoistown, Also includes many biographical sketches and photographs of early pioneers. Illustrated throughout with reproductions of engravings, including two large fold-out sketches (of the Baker Divide Mining Co and of G. Griffith's Granite Quarry in Penryn.) Patron's directory. Large format, measuring 11 inches tall by 9 inches wide, 416 pp; issued without dust jacket. Fine in dark blue cloth with gilt lettering and decorations on the spine, issued without a dustjacket.
