[BOARD OF FIRE COMMISSIONERS] RULES AND REGULATIONS GOVERNING THE SAN FRANCISCO FIRE DEPARTMENT, effective November 1, 1917.
San Francisco: Shannon-Conmy Printing Co., 1917. First thus. The official handbook spelling out every detail of administration, maintenance, working conditions and more for the San Franscisco Fire Department. At the time this was issued, the department was still using horses (when the last of the firehorses were retired on Dec 31, 1921) but had also begun using motorized vehicles so there are detailed instructions on the care of horses and on the care of the motors, brakes, batteries, automobile tires, etc. The back of this small handbook included several pages for amendments - and this copy, obviously one used by a working fireman, has 5 pages of rules changes (many related to sick leave, hours when beds could be used, etc) dated Aug 12, 1918 and 2 more undated pages pasted onto some of those blank page. 154 pp. Pocket size, measuring just 4 3/16 inches wide, 6 3/8 inches tall. Very uncommon. Very good in plain flexible dark red cloth covers (some minor fraying to the edges of the covers, usual toning to the pages.)
