Adams believed that a rank-and-file professor with a love of the university could deal effectively with all elements, on and off the campus, and thus agreed to serve as president of Michigan State University - but for only nine months. He dealt with students' protests against recruiting on campus, black students' occupation of Wilson Hall, an anti-ROTC demonstation, a strice by university employees, and the October 15 Vietnam Moratorium with an equanimity born of genuine interest and concern. His administration style was marked by a certain barbed wit and a willingness to listen and to talk. In this book, he offers a unique insight into the political and emotional turmoil of a major American university during a time of great upheaval.
