DRESDEN. KUNSTSAMMLUNG ALBERTINUM; OSKAR KOKOSCHKA OSKAR KOKOSCHKA und Dresden.
Dresden. Kunstsammlung Albertinum. OSKAR KOKOSCHKA und Dresden. 288 pp., roughly 190 color and 80 b&w illustrations. 4to, boards. Leipzig, Seemann Kunstverlag, 1996. Austrian-born artist Oskar Kokoschka (1886-1980) lived in Dresden from 1917 to 1923, important years in the development of his work and stature as an internationally know artist. In 1917 he was sent to recuperate from mental and physical shock suffered during the war at a sanatorium near Dresden: two years later he was appointed to a professorship at the Dresden Academy. These years are often treated separately in surveys of his work, in many instances they are refered to as a time of "color painting", when he used color in a way much like "Die Bruck" artist Emil Nolde. This book, an exhibition catalogue for a show traveling from Dresden to Austria in late 1996 and early 1997, features a well-illustrated account of his career during this pivotal period. Text in German.
