Title: Washington City and Capital.
Description: Washington: Government Printing Office, 1937. First Edition. Hardcover. Spine lettering faded. Former owner's notes on first blank page. Faint foxing to half title page. Front hinge weakening. Rear map and last pages missing ; It is said that when President Roosevelt received his copy, he exclaimed, 'Where is the steamer trunk that goes with it? ' A huge book, over 1100 pages, really comprising two books, one a guide to the city and one a guide to the workings of the government. The text is notable for its candor, especially in the section regarding African-Americans and the poor social conditions prevalent at the time. Much of the critical reporting on this and other issues was cut from the revised edition issued five years hence, to appease conservatives. This first, unexpurgated, edition is a monumental work and is justly praised as one of the crowning achievements of the Program; Amercian Guide Series; B&W Photographs; Thick 8vo; xxvi, 1141 pages. Very Good-.
