Description: First Edition; 8vo; pp. viii, 9-370 4 blank pages; original black blind stamped boards with gilt design on front; short title on spine; browning flecking to page edges, foxing and flecking throughout; browning to page edges; pasted in newspaper article on Brick from authors cottage in Tasmania sent to the Irish Parliament; 3 small groups of pencilled notes in margin of introduction; boards have wear and small pieces of cloth missing around edges and spine; otherwise a good copy. New York, Published ar the Office of the "Citizen", 1854. Begins with Irish Nationalist history of the famines in 1817 and 1822, tenants rights or lack of them and the author sentenced to 14 years transportation for the 1848 uprising. we are given precise descriptions of ships he is placed on their captains, crew and passengers; schooling of convicts by convicts on Hulks, escapee convicts caught and flogged with "cat of nine tails", voyage to India, life before the mast, Bermuda, with asides such as " Oh ! Had I the wings of a dove"; slaves and the slave trade, Van Diemens Land, convict life, the dogging of Kangaroos, railways, habits of British soldiers, Sydney Town and Wooloomoooloo, revolution brewing in Cuba, escape and much more. Ends steaming past Staten Island into a forest of masts where the author will later set up the "Citizen". Ferguson 12654.
