Birmingham; The Classics of Surgery Library; 1986. Frederic Wood Jones was one of the most outstanding scientists Australia has known. During his lifetime he published some 362 papers, articles and books. He occupied the Elder Chair of Anatomy at the University of Adelaide from 1919 to 1926. He was professor of anatomy at Melbourne University from 1930 to 1937. While still in Melbourne he resolved that on reaching the age of 60 he would return to England where he would devote himself to unfinished studies in Natural History but just before he reached that age the University of Manchester invited him to fill its chair in succession to Sir John Stopford. He occupied that chair from 1938 until 1945, he then went on to occupied the chair of anatomy for the Royal College of Surgeons until 1949.
