Christchurch, Stevens and Co., 1868. Edward Gibbon Wakefield (1796-1862) is considered a key figure in the establishment of the colonies of South Australia and New Zealand. He promoted a system of colonization under which public land in the colonies came to be sold, instead of given away, the proceeds being applied to emigration, survey, roads, churches and schools. In 1837, at his instance and by his efforts an Association was formed in new Zealand, having for its object the colonization of New Zealand based on his principles.
