Light green cloth with black, red and gilt design and lettering on cover and spine, top edges gilt. Some overall wear and soiling of covers, and period owner name, clean tight copies; James Allen has been described as Kentucky's first important novelist. This is a 2 volume set of Allen's first commercial success, A Kentucky Cardinal, and its less successful sequel, Aftermath. Set in 1850, it is the story of the romance between a naturalist and a society girl. First published in 1894, this novel established Allen among critics as a serious literary author ; B&W Illustrations; each 138 pages. Very Good+ .
