[British Political History]. Junius - The LETTERS Of The CELEBRATED JUNIUS

Title: The LETTERS Of The CELEBRATED JUNIUS
Description: London: , 1783. 1st thus (NUC NJ 0198109; Lowndes: Vol IV, pg 1241). This edition claims to have 14 letters not previously collectedition. Modern half-calf with marbled boards. Original spine laid-down. New eps. 2 volumes. 12mo. Binding - Nr Fine. Text blocks - VG (faint sporadic foxing/D10-D12 has paper loss in margins [does not affect text]). Of a Whiggish political bent, the Junius' letters attacked many of George III's reign, including the monarch himself. The first Junius letter appeared in Woodfall's 'Public Advertiser' in Nov, 1768 and they were published periodically through 1772. The original author of the letters has never been satifactorily determined, though current scholarship attributes them to Sir Philip Francis (denied by Woodfall), a clerk in the War Office during the years Junius' letters were appearing in the 'Public Advertiser.' Per Lowndes, 'A copy of this edition, with MS notes and corrections, by Sir Philip Francis, sold at the sale of Sir Philip Francis's library at Evans's in 1838, for 12£, 12s, and was bought in the name of Armstrong, for Mr H. R. Francis, a member of the family.' Interesting coincidence, n'est-ce pas?.
