[Introduction]. The F-5L was "a variant of the Felixstowe F.5 that was designed by Commander John C. Porte of the Royal Navy. This US version had Liberty engines, which were noted in its designation with the letter "L". 138 F-5Ls were produced by the United States Navy's Naval Aircraft Factory: 60 by Curtiss, and 30 by Canadian Aeroplanes of Toronto.. In April 1919, one of these F-5L flying boats, flown by Lieutenant H. B. Grow, set a flight endurance record of 20 hours and 19 minutes." ["Ancient Seaplanes"]. Page a rather well-known individual in the aviation industry, taking his first solo flight in 1913, was one of the first to fly scheduled planes to foreign destinations as a pilot for American transoceanic [1920-21], and "who in 1943 became Director of Engineering for the entire airplane division of the Curtiss-Wright Corporation. From his headquarters in St. Louis, he was credited with designing some sixty models for the company. Perhaps his most celebrated achievement was the C-46 "Commando," the cargo-carrying bulwark of the war effort." [Horgan, City of Flight].
