Description: Boston: Printed by Crocker & Brewster, 1829. 1st edition (issue with 'duty', p. 3. American Imprints 37885; Sabin 67203). INSCRIBED by Quincy, at the top of the t.p. to the Rev. Dr. Osgood. Original printed wrappers. Now housed in an archival mylar sleeve. 31, [1] pp. Untrimmed. 8vo. 9-1/4" x 5-7/8". Small ink stain to top corner of text. Creased rear wrapper, fading half-way through the text block. A VG+ copy in the original wrappers, and quite scarce thus. Quincy a favored son of Massachusetts whose illustrious career included stints as Congressman [1805-1813], state senator, mayor of Boston [1823 - 1829], and finally President of Harvard, where, with the assistance of Judge Story, he molded the law school into the institution that is today regarded as one of the nation's premier academic establishments. As Mayor of Boston, which he concludes with this speech, he was known both for his city improvements & reform. [DAB].
