So begins a local newspaper's account relating the fate of the city that had just suffered the effects of what was to eventually be known as the most powerful earthquake ever to strike modern civilization. Despite the extensive devastation wrought by Mother Nature, recovery did come, & today we are able to thank God those pundits were proven very wrong.
