The Pourtraicture of His Sacred Majestie in His Solitudes and Sufferings. With Prayers Used in the Time of His Restraint. [bound with] The PAPERS Which PASSED At NEW-CASTLE Betwixt His Sacred Majestie and Mr. Al. Henderson Concerning the Change of Church - Government. Anno Domini 1646 [London: Royston, 1649]. [London]: Reprinted in Regis Memoriam for John Williams, 1649. 24mo: A - H12; ¦12 - 2¦12. 3-13/16" x 2". 1st issue of this edition of Eikon (Madan 34; Almack 37; Wing E-301). 3rd edition of the Papers (Madan 99; Wing C-2535B; cf. Goldsmith 1143, for the 8vo edition), and the one oft found with this miniature edition of Eikon. [8], 175, [9]; [4], 42, [2] pp. Eikon t.p. printed in red & black. Period brown full calf binding; flat back with 3 raised bands., closely trimmed, occasionally affecting running title. A Good copy. Folding frontis (22, second state), preceded by Explanation I. Folding portrait (11: King, Queen, Charles & James). ¶ An unusual & scarce edition of this famous Royalist publication, purporting to be the memoirs of the recently executed King. So controversial was it that Parliament commissioned an answer with John Milton's Eikonoklastes. Milton was the first to cast doubt on its authorship, and Madan's New Bibliography of the Eikon Basilike demonstrated that while Dr. John Gauden was the author, he worked closely from Charles' manuscripts.
