Title: The AMERICAN VINE-DRESSER'S GUIDE. New and Revised Edition
Description: New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1872. 1st edition thus (Gabler, G28989). Original purple publisher's cloth with gilt lettering to the front board. [2],123, [1 (blank)] pp. Frontis portrait (tissue guard still present). 7-1/8" x 5". Withal, a Good copy. In an effort to bring viticulture to the U.S. Loubat planted two vineyards of 11,000 grape vines in Long Island & New Jersey from his father's extensive French vineyards. Although his vineyards ultimately failed and were sold for building lots (Gabler, who also cites Pinney, G28989), the work is nevertheless an important early treatise on American viticulture. This new and revised edition contains additional information not included in the 1829 2nd edition, and further variations in the translation. Text in both French & English, presented on facing pages.
