Title: A COMPLETE TREATISE On PERSPECTIVE In THEORY And PRACTICE; On the True Principles of Dr. Brook Taylor. Made Clear, in Theory, by Various Moveable Schemes, and Diagrams; and Reduced to Practice, in the Most Familiar and Intelligent Manner ..
Description: London: Printed for the Author, 1778. The 2nd edition, Corrected & Improved, with Large Additions (Lowndes 1460). Period mottled calf, with later elaborately gilded rebacking to style. Period marbled eps. 2 volumes. Text volume pagination: [12], 296, 8 pp. Frontis, & 48 plates. Folio. 14" x 9-1/8". VG (usual bit of foxing throughout/bpt [Joesph Walker]). Ex-lib, with occasional oval stamp to text volume & to margins of 7 plates (frontis, first 3 plates, 21, 33, & 41). Thomas Malton was an architectual draughtsman of some repute; known for his accuracy in perspective, young J. M. W. Turner was brought to Malton by his father for lessons on that very subject, and subsequently Turner, in later life, said "My real master was Tom Malton." [DNB]. This work one of the earliest [if not the earliest] English publications on the subject. The last 8 pp of Volume I describe the case of the author, who lost the [bulk of the] first edition sheets [1776] to fire; and accounts for the relative scarcity of that edition.
