The text is illustrated with numerous black-and-white photographs, illustrations and the line drawings. Illustrated endpapers, showing a map of Germany and its ancient and modern political geography. Illustrated board showing a mediaeval couple against a white background with black writing on the front panel and spine. Minor bumping to the head and to the heel of the spine and to the top book corners there is heavy bumping to the lower book corners. Shelfwear, insect activity and foxing to the lower book edges and a little rubbing to the top book edges. The white of the board has become quite yellow. Foxing to the top paper edge and previous owner's name to the top edge of the free front endpaper. Illustrated dustwrapper, saying illustration as for front board with white background in black writing on the front panel and spine. The dustwrapper is rubbed, faded and quite grubby. A little rubbing to the dustwrapper corners and to the head and to the heel of the spine a few small close to tears to the top dustwrapper edge. There is foxing to the verso of the dustwrapper. From the editor's preface " The aim of this book is to increase awareness of the artistic and intellectual contribution of the German-speaking countries of Central Europe.".
