Boston:, Hardy, Pratt & Co.,, 1899. Edition Grand Format which is limited to 500 copies and this is No. 200. This set has 39 volumes and is missing only volume XI. Illustrated by a variety of artists with illustrations reproduced in photogravure and with tissue guards. The illustrations in each volume are listed. 9 1/2 x 6 1/2. Original green cloth with gilt-stamped facsimile of Balzac's signature on front cover. Tipped-on paper label with title on the spine. Fore and bottom edges are deckled (untrimmed). Top edge is gilt. Translated by Katharine Prescott Wormeley. Volume XL is a biography of Balzac titled "Honore de Balzac, A Memoir" by Wormeley. It also contains an appendix listing all of Balzac's works including a chronological listing and an index. There is very light shelf wear, one of the labels (Vol. XXIII is missing half of the spine label) other spine labels are browned and chipped. Light occasional foxing, mainly on margins. Except as noted, this is an attractive set of books in Very Good condition.
