Spine rubbed, wear to outer corners; rubbing to the marbled boards; broken joints neatly repaired internally with paper making the book sound (if a little too tight) in the binding; frontispiece and title leaf are browned; occasional foxing to text but text is clean and unworn otherwise. With ink inscription on the recto of the frontispiece " S. Johnes Knight. The Gift of John Villiers Shelley, Esq. June 26, 1837. The Rolliad owes its Poetical existence to George Ellis, Esq, who [invited?] the [analogy?] of the Hero of the Poem." A collection of satires on Pitt and his followers by Richard Tickell, Richard Fitzpatrick, Joseph Richardson, George Ellis, French Laurence and others. Pencil note on front free endpaper "By the Esto Perpetua Club; founded 1784; supporters of Fox against Pitt. First published in The Morning Herald and The Daily Advertiser in 1784. First collected ed. 1785. 9th ed. 1791; 21st ed. 1799. This ed. Lowndes p. 2121, called 'best edition', where he lists the authors." Sir John Villiers Shelley, 7th Baronet of Michelgrove was born on 18 March 1808. He married Louisa Elizabeth Anne Knight, daughter of Samuel Johnes Knight, on 13 August 1832. He died on 26 January 1867 at age 58. The poet Shelley was from the other Shelley Bts, of Castle Goring.
