ABRANCHES, (JOAQUIM CANDIDO). Album Michaelense.
Ponta Delgada [Azores]: Manoel Corrêa Botelho, 1869. First edition. Hardcover. Tall octavo. Bound in contemporary quarter maroon leather and marbled boards. xiii, 2-138 pp. One map, one folding lithographed panoramic view of Ponta Delgada, and 35 lithographs on 34 inserted plates (complete). Boards are rubbed, with wear to edges and outer corners; inner hinges cracked; two small ink drawings (donkey, sailor's head) on verso of rear free endpaper; pastedowns have come loose from the boards; damp stain to lower outer corner of text and plates to page 11 (including the map, the folding view, and three plates); occasional light foxing to text and some plates; some soiling to text and plates, mainly to the lower outer corners (thumb soiling); two tears to the folding view near the fold once repaired by sewing - one extending into the sky at top, the other into the caption at bottom (threads removed, subsequent repair); joints partially cracked; vertical crease to two leaves; generally VG otherwise, text and plates unworn, still sound in the binding. >>>> A book on the island of São Miguel in the Azores, with information on the climate, administration, waters, notable structures, churches, tobacco (one paragraph), economy, history, etc. The lithographed views by Serrano are mainly of buildings, with one plate having two costume illustrations, and are of rather good quality. The book appears to be very scarce, perhaps rare.
