Description: Portrait of John Locke (1632-1704), half-length to front, with head turned to look towards right; wearing a loose gown over shirt with high collar; in an oval frame decorated with shell, scroll, Acanthus leaf and ribbon on top, placed over a pedestal, with cartouche in front, featuring a figure seated behind a globe and shield, holding a laurel branch, leaning on books; three volumes of books on left, lettered with Lock. Vol. III., Lock I, and Vol II.; illustration to Tindal's 'The continuation of Mr. Rapin's History of England' (London).Inscribed on the top of the oval: JOHN LOCKE Esq.Signed and dated at bottom: G. KNELLER Eques PINXIT 1697. / In the Possession of the Rev.d D.r William Geekie. / G Vertue Sculp. 1738.On verso, two marks from the same collector, Pim van Eekelen [L. 5101].[NL] Portret van filosoof John Locke (1632-1704), ten halve lijve van voren, met het hoofd naar rechts gedraaid; in een ovale lijst versierd met schelp, rol, acanthusblad en band bovenaan, geplaatst boven een sokkel, met cartouche vooraan, met een figuur zittend achter een globe en schild, een lauwertak vasthoudend, leunend op boeken; links drie boekdelen. Gemaakt door Vertue naar Keller. Etching and engraving on paper, with some margins; total: 432 x 264 mm; some staining on the top margin, some rubbing, otherwise in great condition.
