Description: Christ carrying the Cross; In the center Christ has fallen to his knees and looks at the Virgin who is praying at the right, Roman soldiers pushing him along, Simon of Cyrene helping. After the painting by Anthony van Dyck in the Sint-Pauluskerk, Antwerp. Engraving in the same direction as the original painting. Inscription below: ET, BAIVLANS SIBI CRVCEM, EXIVIT IN EVM QVI DICITVR CALVARIAE LOCVM. Ioan. 19. Signed below, Anton. van Dyck pinxit. / Franciscus vanden Wijngaerde excudit. According to the Hollstein, the plate was sold in Brussel, 6 October 1755 (Catalogue des planches en cuivre apres Rubens..., n.10 'N[os]. S[aveur] portant la Croix, Lugt R. 891) included in the 1761 Recueil and sold in 1781 (Catalogue des Livres, Estampes, et Planches gravées... Duc Charles-Alexandre de Lorraine et de Bar, no. 44, Lugt R. 3293.). On verso an unidentified collector's mark (L.2641b); according to the Fundation Custodia record, it may belong to the collector W. Nijs from Rotterdam, whose collection was sold around 1922. Engraving on paper with margins; plate mark: 387 x 296 mm, total: 411 x 317 mm; only state; some light foxing along the margins, repaired tear on the left margin, otherwise in good condition.
