Cruikshank, George (1792-1878) - [Satirical print/spotprent] Economy/De economie (Koning George IV met zijn maitresse).

Title: [Satirical print/spotprent] Economy/De economie (Koning George IV met zijn maitresse).
Description: Satirical print dating 1816, likely portraying King George IV with one of his mistresses at a table. Like his father preceding him on the throne, George IV was strongly criticized for his personal behavior and for the little competence he demonstrated in economic and political matters. In the scene, a man with a broom in his hand forecasts a gloomy future for the king and the nation. Instead of the opulent dinner portrayed in the middle of the scene, the king is represented sitting at a much poorer table on the top right of the plate, where his future is projected. Signed and dated on the bottom left: ... by .. May 1st 1816 / in Cheapside London and titled on the bottom at center: Economy. On verso stamped in black ink: L.A. DE VRIES [not in Lugt]. Hand colored etching on paper, trimmed to plate mark; total: 218 x 252 mm; toned paper, smidges and a crease due to folding towards the right. Very charming piece.
