Description: Marbled paper wrappers. (32) pp. Light browning. The occasional, light dampstain. In good condition.A rare anti-Spanish and anti-Catholic pamphlet about the 80 Years' War. Likely published by Dutch rebels in response to secret, attempted peace negotiations between the Spanish and the States General held in the final year of the so-called Ten Years (1588-1598). A large, engraved, illustration on the titlepage, captioned with Psalm 43:1 (Vindicate me, O God, And plead my cause against an ungodly nation; Oh, deliver me from the deceitful and unjust man!), challenges the sincerity of Spanish peace proposals. The first part of the text presents the patriotic poem Aen Hollandt (25 stanzas). The second offers a poetic critique of the negotiations in 44 stanzas, titled Antwoordt op 't voorgaende Referyn. Aen de misleyde de Nederlantsche Provintien.B2261 - Tachtig jarige oorlog - anti Spaans - anti katholiek - Nederlandse rebellen - 1598 - Nederlandse provincien. On the titlepage, a ship with white flags bears a giant, three-headed figure representing Spanish rule (Empire and Inquisition), flanked by smaller figures who row and navigate the ship. Boats in the foreground of the print, chained to the central ship, fly satirical white flags that bear text describing crimes previously committed by Spain against the Netherlands. On the shore, a Dutchman stands in a garden with a Dutch lion, with the text I desire a country but not a deceit.
