Description: Half leather binding, decorated spine with stain and small damages, 28 x 22 cm. Illustrated with 32 beautiful etchings on 28 pages by Pieter de Mare (1758-1796) after Christina Chalon (1749-1808). Extended with twenty-two extra etchings signed by de Mare. Two numbered and a third composition after Chalon, signed in pencil and other etchings by de Mare after masters from the Dutch golden age: four Jan Steens, two Adriaen van Ostade, a Claes Visscher, a Molenaer, another Ostade, a Frans Hals, a Gabriel Metsu, a Frans van Mieris, a fold-out milkmaid by Potter, two profile heads by David Teniers, a Caspar Netscher, two Berghems and another fold-out Potter. The Rijksmuseum holds several impressions both in earlier and later states than those featuring this volume. With the exception of the first three extra etching, all the other impressions are not signed within the plate. Instead, the signature is reported in pencil, on either bottom corners. Good copy, first edition dated 1779. Christina Chalon was a Dutch painter and draftsman. She married with musician Christan Friedrich Ruppe. She is buried in The Hooglandse Kerk in Leiden.
