(Leatherbound) Near fine. xxxii, 517pp; xii, 580pp, [folding plate]; xxxii, 580pp. Complete in 3 volumes; vol.III dated 1837 (appears to be a printing error as the set was issued together in 1838). 8vo. In period tan full-leather (polished calf, presumably). The binding quite striking; ornate gilt tooling on the spine and tan leather making the set radiate on a shelf. Top and bottom boards with simple double-ruled border in gilt, inner dotted border stamped. Spine with five raised bands, each compartment ornately tooled in gilt; title compartment in red leather, lettered in gilt; volume number compartment in dark-brown leather, lettered and tooled in gilt. All runners tooled in gilt. All edges marbled, with matching marbled EPs. A truly exquisite binding, with only a couple spots of rubbing, light rubbing at extremities; some age-spotting to leather, as is common with this tan. Each volume with blue silk ribbon marker (split at head of textblock from age, as is unfortunately common; marker laid in). Portrait frontispiece engraving of Clarendon, his facsimile signature beneath; with full-page protective tissue guard. Frontispiece foxed. Textblock remarkably bright and clean, with only an occasional spot of foxing. With folding plates, including the Table of Descendants of the Lord Chancellor Clarendon at rear of vol.II and the facsimile letter at p.496 / 97 of vol.III. Errata printed at end of p.xxxii in vol.I. Set printed by A. Spottiswoode. Alas, binder unknown.
