First edition, 2 volumes, 8vo, xiii-[xvi], 314; [2], 340pp, original green cloth gilt, top of spine cracked on volume II, several signatures slightly extended, but generally a very good copy. Courtenay was a Member of Parliament who also devoted a large amount of his time to literature. A good part of the work appeared in the New Monthly Magazine between 1838- 39. A contemporary review calls the Commentaries ""an almost inseparable companion to Shakspeare's Plays"" (Allibone citing Lond. Literary Gazette). From the library of George Stephens.
