London, the author, 1781. 2 volumes, 8vo, pp. [16], 352; [16], 434, [2] ads; engraved portrait frontispiece; full contemporary calf, red and green morocco labels on spines; spine ends a little chipped and calf is peeling along the upper joint of vol. I; all else good and sound. The dedication is to Richard Brinsley Sheridan. The first paragraph of this book was composed by Samuel Johnson. It was Johnson who proposed to Davies that he undertake this biography, and supplied "the early part of Garrick's life" and "several diverting anecdotes" (Courtney & Smith).
