Miss Densmore's study of the Chippewa customs and culture at the following reservations: the Red Lake, White Earth, Mille Lac, Cass Lake and Leech Lake in Minnesota; the Lac Court Oreilles in of Wisconsin; and the Manitou Rapids Reserve of Ontario, Canada. This work grew out of the author's previous research on Chippewa music: "The study of tribal songs led to a friendliness with the people and a willingness on their part to give information concerning their customs" (Foreword).
