COLONEY, MYRON. Manomin: a rhythmical romance of Minnesota, the great rebellion, and the Minnesota massacres.
St. Louis, published by the author, 1866. First and only edition, 12mo, pp. xv, [1], 297; this copy without the tipped in albumen frontispiece portrait which is in some copies; good sound copy in orig. blue cloth. In 1858 the author settled in Douglas County on the shores of Lake Ida, 160 miles northwest of St. Paul, in the vicinity of present-day Alexandria. Here, he met and befriended one Andreas Darling and his wife. Because of the Sioux Massacres, Coloney moved to Missouri, and was followed, at Coloney's invitation, by Darling, where Darling was given charge of managing Coloney's farm. No sooner had Darling arrived in Missouri, however, than he was killed by bushwhackers while defending Coloney's home. This poetical romance was published by Coloney to benefit Darling's widow and children, who returned to Minnesota the following year. Sabin 14682
