Various Authors - Volumes I - VIII of Cornhill Magazine

Title: Volumes I - VIII of Cornhill Magazine
Description: London, Smith, Elder and Co. 1860-63. Leather. The first eight volumes of Cornhill Magazine. From the library of the Titley Court Estate. Titley Court was home to the Greenly family for over 500 years. The Greenly family have a long and fascinating history, perhaps most famous for the life and library of Elizabeth Greenly, later Lady Elizabeth Greenly, who was noted as a collector and patron of literature and the arts. The Greenly library consists mostly of her collection of contemporary Regency literature, however it was expanded after her death by various members of her extended family. Notable among these are Edward Greenly, a famous Victorian geologist, and William Bradford, a founding father who travelled to America on the Mayflower and who was closely associated with the Greenly's at Titley Court through marriage. The rich and diverse history of the Greenlys at Titley Court is reflected in the broad selection of works found in the library. Collated, complete. Illustrated, with twelve plates to volumes I, II, III, IV and V. Fourteen plates to volumes VI and VIII as well as twenty-one plates to volume VII. Cornhill was one of the leading literary journals of the Nineteenth Century. It was founded by George Murray Smith in 1859 and has a selection of articles on diverse subjects as well as the serialisation of new novels. Cornhill hoped to have a similar readership to Dickens' popular magazine All the Year Round. Some of the works in their serialised form are: The Small House at Allington (Volumes VI, VII and VIII) The Adventures of Philip on His way Through the World (Volumes III, IV, V and VI) In uniformed half calf bindings with gilt stamping to spines. Externally, very smart. Light rubbing to extremities. Internally, all volumes are generally firmly bound. The gatherings between pages 495 and 506 inclusive are disbound to volume III but present. Scattered spots throughout, heavier to the plates. Very Good . Ill.: Various. Very Good .
