Temple Bar was a London journal, issued monthly with a cover price of one shilling and was originally not illustrated. The journal was launched in December 1860 by John Maxwell with the bohemian author George Sala as its editor. The contents were miscellaneous, with a strong emphasis on serialised fiction. Editorship later passed to George Bentley and enjoyed a long period of prosperous stability. Contributors under the Bentley regime were Wilkie Collins, Henry Kingsley, George Gissing, R L Stevenson and Anthony Trollope. It also carried high quality women's fiction from Mrs Henry Wood and Rhoda Broughton. Sala, a noted follower of Charles Dickens and journalist at several of the author's magazines, would release the magazine shortly after the first publication of William Makepeace Thackeray's Cornhill Magazine, with which it would become something of a rival, in keeping with the rivalry between Thackeray and Dickens himself. It would run until 1906, with its high-point of circulation reaching around 13000 per month. A excellent example of serialised Victorian fiction, before the format's popularity waned with the onset of silent film in the early Twentieth Century. Contains the bookbinders' label of B. Hunt and Sons of Birmingham. In decorative half-calf bindings with gilt detailing and paper-covered boards. Externally quite smart, there is some minor wear to the boards, extremities, joints and backstrip, with some minor strain to some hinges. Internally, the pages are generally firmly bound, with some strain in areas and some partially detached pages to volume fourteen, and are generally bright and clean, although there are instances of spotting in areas and light foxing to endpages.
