Description: London , John Maxwell , 1874. Leather. A scarce and complete set of the fictional novel Taken at the Flood by victorian popular novelist, Mary Elizabeth Braddon. Braddon was an extremely prolific writer, producing more than 80 novels with very inventive plots. Braddon also founded Belgravia magazine, which presented readers with serialised sensation novels, poems, travel narratives, and biographies, as well as essays on fashion, history and science. She also edited Temple Bar magazine. Braddon's legacy is tied to the sensation fiction of the 1860s. Her other novels include The Captain of the Vulture, The Doctor's Wife, Dead Men's Shoes, and Lady Audley's Secret. With Justice of the Peace, and Deputy Lieutenant, Richard Combe Miller's armorial bookplates to the front pastedown of each volume. Complete in three volumes. Rebound in half calf bindings with marbled boards, and gilt lettering to the spines. Externally, sound, with rubbing to extremities, and light shelfwear. All front hinges are slightly strained, with two rear hinges being slightly strained. Internally, all are generally firmly bound and bright throughout. Instances of scattered spotting to all volumes.
