Joseph Baretti - Tolondron. Speeches to John Bowle About His Edition of Don Quixote; Together with Some Account of Spanish Literature

Title: Tolondron. Speeches to John Bowle About His Edition of Don Quixote; Together with Some Account of Spanish Literature
Description: London, R Faulder, 1786. First edition. Leather. A scarce first edition of this work by Joseph Baretti. Joseph Baretti was an Italian literary critic, poet, writer, translator, linguist and author. Baretti's life was peppered with controversies and this work is no exception, and is a scathing and bitter reply to an attack by English Hispanist John Bowle. In 1785, Bowle had published an attack on Joseph Baretti and his editing of Don Quixote. Bowle himself had published what is now considered the first scholarly edition of Don Quixote, and complained of its negative reception and the difficulty in its publication and translation. Baretti wrote this response in the following year. Recently and expertly rebound in half calf bindings with marbled boards. Externally, in lovely condition. Internally, firmly bound. Lacks half tile as usual with the rebinding. Pages bright with spotting throughout. Loose newspaper clipping inserted. Ink signature of John Frost to verso of the title page. Very Good Indeed . Ill.: None. Very Good Indeed .
