In 1822 he planned, in conjunction with his elder brother Michael (1796-1874), a series of tales illustrative of Irish life, which should be for Ireland what the Waverley Novels were for Scotland. In April 1825 appeared the first series of Tales of the O'Hara Family, which achieved immediate and decided success. In 1826, a second series was published, containing the Irish novel, The Nowlans. The Mayor of Windgap,, The Denounced (1830) and The Smuggler (1831) followed in quick succession, and were received with considerable favour. Most of these deal with the darker and more painful phases of life, but the feeling shown in his last, Father Connell, is brighter and tenderer. In half calf bindings with marbled paper boards. There is wear to the extremities, including bumping and some rubbing. Sections of the leather are missing or coming away. The hinges are cracked and strained, with some of the boards being attached by the cords only, and may detach in the post. The text block is tight and firm. The front free endpaper of volume one is detached. Internally the pages are bright and generally clean with the occasional spots. Overall the condition is GOOD ONLY due to the condition of the extremities, but is VERY GOOD internally. Good Only . Ill.: Not Stated. Good Only .
