Benjamin Baddam (c16931740) was a printer and compiler of the Memoirs of the Royal Society. He compiled an abridgement of the Royal Society's Philosophical Transactions. It was printed for him between 1738 and 1744 by Godfrey Smith in ten volumes, with 131 folding plates drawn by G. Smith and engraved by James Hulett, under the title Memoirs of the Royal Society, being a new abridgment of the Philosophical Transactions for the years 1665 to 1735. Previous abridgements of the Philosophical Transactions had been carried out on a piecemeal basis, whereas Baddam's version provided continuity and uniformity for the first time. The boards are detached. The text block is tight and firm. There is significant wear to the extremities, including bumping and rubbing with loss to the leather. Internally the Pages are slightly browned with some handling marks and slight spotting. There are some. There are a couple of closed tears. There is an armorial nameplate on the front pastedown.
