Title: La Palingenesie Philosophique, Ou Idees Sur L&Apos;Etat Futur Des Etres Vivants
Description: Amsterdam, Mac-Michel Rey, 1769. First edition. Leather. A scarce first edition of Charles Bonnet's important philosophical work. Four volumes bound in two; complete. In French. Charles Bonnet (March 13, 1720 – May 20, 1793), Swiss naturalist and philosophical writer, was born at Geneva, of a French family driven into Switzerland by the religious persecution in the 16th century. In this work, Bonnet argued that females carry within them all future generations in a miniature form. He believed these miniature beings, sometimes called hormonal, would be able to survive even great cataclysms such as the biblical Flood; he predicted, moreover, that these catastrophes brought about evolutionary change, and that after the next disaster, men would become angels, mammals would gain intelligence, and so on. In roan bindings. Externally, generally smart with slight shelfwear, mainly to corners and to head of spine. Internally, firmly bound with a couple of small chips to the first and last few pages of the second volume. Generally bright and clean but with the odd spot and previous owner's ink inscriptions to the front and rear of both volumes. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .
