The very scarce first edition of this work.Written in the style of Alexander Pope, bibliographer Reiman wrote in 1979 that the work was 'more popular during Barrett's lifetime than any single work by a major or secondary poet then living, including Scott or Byron.'Author Eaton Stannard Barrett revised and almost entirely rewrote the poem for an 1818 second edition, stating at that point 'I determined to rewrite the poem. I have found so much omission, alteration, and new matter necessary, that the work, as it now stands, may fairly be considered original&apos.Illustrated with a frontispiece.With the contemporary inscription of Sophia of Walsham, Suffolk, to the half title.With an advertisement leaf to the rear.Lacking the front free endpaper.A vanishingly scarce first edition.
