An additional atlas volume was also published to coincide with this edition, which is not present here.First published in 1788, this is a a fictional account of the travels of a Scythian named Anacharsis in Greece in the middle of the 4th century BCE, authored by French scholar Jean-Jacques Barthélemy.Barthelemy deciphered the Palmyrene alphabet in 1754 and the Phoenician alphabet in 1758, being the first person to decipher an extinct language.With the bookplate of the Repton School Library to the front pastedown, and their stamp to the title page head of volume I.With an individual title page and individual pagination to each volume.This work is referenced in the first chapter of 'Madame Bovary' by Gustave Flaubert. In a half morocco binding, with paper covered boards. Significant rubbing to back strip. Joints starting, with boards firmly held. Bookplate to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound.
