The first edition, first impression of this three-volume set, one of 550 limited edition copies in the publisher's original cloth bindings with pictorial gilt to the front boards and spines. All edges gilt. Inscribed to the limitations page of Volume I by the author. Thomas James Barratt (1841–1914) was an English businessman who was the chairman of the soap manufacturer A. & F. Pears. His pioneering methods of brand marketing has led him to be called "the father of modern advertising". This three-volume set provides a comprehensive history of Hampstead from the prehistoric era until the early 20th century. Barratt relates details of the literary history, poets, and writers who lived there, as well as information on the nature, geology, and wildlife of the area. Social history is also included, with details of the standards of living, and illustrations of homes through the eras. All volumes contain a frontispiece and numerous in-text illustrations. Volume I is illustrated with a further fourteen plates and a folding map. Volume II is illustrated with a further thirty-one plates and two folding maps (one inserted in the pocket to the rear). Volume III is illustrated with a further eighteen plates, one full page map and two folding maps. Plates are a mixture of colour reproductions and photogravures, all with tissue paper guards. In the publisher's original cloth bindings. Externally smart, with a little bumping to the extremities and shelf wear to the head and tail of the spine. Tears to the tail of the front and rear joints to Volume II. Damp-staining to the spine and rear board of Volume II. Small tear to the head of the rear joint to Volume III, with shelf wear to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with some spotting to the first and last few pages. Good . Ill.: Not Stated. Good .
