He first led his team of nine German mountaineers in 1929 in an attempt on Kangchenjunga, once considered the second-highest mountain in the world (now confirmed as the third highest). After reaching 26,000 feet, they had to turn back due to poor weather conditions. This work is Bauer's account of their second attempt in 1931, during which Hermann Schaller lost his life; this work won a gold medal in the art competitions of the Olympic Games in the following year. Translated to English by Sumner Austin. Illustrated with numerous black and white plates throughout, and three sketch maps and one graph to the rear of the volume.
