With the binder's label of Henry Sotheran & Co. to the verso of the front free end paper.A collection of 30 subversive and satirical short stories by renowned French novelist and playwright Honoré de Balzac (1799-1850), created to resemble Boccaccio's Decameron. The tales are separated into three sections, and include La Belle Impéria, Les trois Clercs de Saint-Nicholas, and Persévérance d'amour. This fifth edition - the first illustrated edition - is accompanied by 425 vignettes and woodcuts by Gustave Doré (1832-1883), and was considered to be Doré's masterpiece. A variety of engravers, such as Lavieille, Rouget, Pisan, Brévière and Piaud, engraved Doré's illustrations for this work. Bookplate to the front paste down. In a full morocco binding. Externally very smart, with some fading to spine and a little shelf wear to the boards and extremities. Gilt remains bright. Internally, firmly bound.
