M. I. Batten; Donald Smith - English Windmills

Title: English Windmills
Description: London, The Architectural Press, 1930-1932. First edition. Cloth. A first edition two volume set on the history of English windmills, previously owned by architectural historian John Harvey. A first edition two volume set in the publisher's original cloth binding. Two articles concerning windmills are loosely inserted to Volume II. Inscribed by John Hooper Harvey (1911-1997) to the front free end papers of both volumes, an architectural historian who was "the most prolific and arguably the most influential writer on Gothic architecture in the post-war years". Volume I contains Batten's history of the origin and development of windmills, with records of them in Kent, Surrey, and Sussex. Illustrated with a frontispiece, three folding maps, and numerous plates. Collated complete. Volume II contains Smith's record of windmills in Buckinghamshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Middlesex and London. Illustrated with a frontispiece, two folding maps, and numerous plates. Collated complete. Marjorie Isabel Batten (1903-1962) wrote Volume I, an important book because it was published a year after the SPAB Windmills Fund was launched to raise money for the preservation of windmills. Batten was among a small number of pioneering women in the preservation of historic buildings. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally smart, though Vol II is a little faded, and Vol I is faded to the spine with a small ink stain. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with some spotting to the first and last few pages, and to the fore edge, affecting the occasional page. Very Good . Ill.: Various. Very Good .
