The author names to the title pages are under the pseudonyms Ellis and Acton Bell.This copyright edition was been issued by Tauchnitz and is stated to the title page as being a 'new edition, revised with a biographical notice of the authors, a selection from their literary remains and a preface by Currer Bell [Charlotte Bronte]&apos. This 'New Edition' refers to the publication being the first by Tauchnitz. The first Tauchnitz edition; a second one was produced in the same year. This first edition is identified by the 'Bern. Tauchnitz Jun.' imprints to the title pages. Smith, page 82.Lacking the half title to each volume, and all original blanks. Lacking the blank that should follow each half title, and the blank which should appear between the half titles and title pages. To the rear of the work, this copy is lacking also page [313], which should be a contents leaf, lacking the following blank, and lacking page [315], which should feature the publisher's imprint to the foot.Christian Bernhard Tauchnitz founded his Leipzig publishing firm in 1837 at the age of 20. His specialism was publishing foreign language books, particularly English. He began his firm at a defining period for English literature, as popular authors were producing a wider range of work in differing genres and forms. Tauchnitz built a good reputation with many leading British and American authors which lead him to be the principal publisher of English Language books in continental Europe from 1840 to 1940. With a former owner's inscription to the head of the first title page.A wonderful and very scarce early example of these important pieces of classic literature. In a half calf binding, with marbled paper covered boards, and endpapers renewed. Rubbing to back strip head and joints. Head of front joint starting, with board holding firm. Rear hinge starting, with board holding firm. Internally, firmly bound. Inscription to head of title page. Instances of light spotting to page perimeters, with pages generally clean and bright.
