Giovanni Boccaccio - Del Decamerone Di Messer Giovanni Boccacci

Title: Del Decamerone Di Messer Giovanni Boccacci
Description: Amsterdamo, Not Stated, 1761. Hardback. An eighteenth century edition of Giovanni Boccaccio's important 'Human Comedy' in two volumes. In two volumes, in the original Italian. A "false imprint" edition, which states to be printed in 'Amsterdamo' despite it most probably being printed in Venice (see the notice "Si Vende Lire Venti Venete" at end of volume II.) False imprints appeared often in mid-eighteenth century volumes to conceal the origins of items which contained tales of controversial or erotic content. Giovanni Boccaccio's Decameron is a collection of short stories from the fourteenth century, also known as the 'Umana Commedia' (the Human Comedy); containing a series of tales told by a group of seven women and three young men as they shelter to hide from the Black Death; the stories range from erotic to tragic, written with much wit and humour. A classical piece of Italian literature. Illustrated with a frontispiece to vol. I. An uncommon edition of this important work.  Rebound in uniform full calf binding with titles in gilt to morocco spine labels. Externally sound with shelf wear, rubbed to head and tail of spine and extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Light spotting affecting only odd leaf, pages otherwise generally very clean throughout.
