A new edition of this work in the publisher's original cloth binding, with pictorial gilt to the front board. Illustrated with diagrams throughout, and two moveable diagrams to demonstrate the "motions of features in portraits". Sir David Brewster (1781-1868) was a British scientist, inventor and author. He is best remembered for inventing the kaleidoscope and his experimental work in physical optics, discovering Brewster's angle. He wrote this fascinating treatise to illustrate the use of scientific principles by ancient governments and religious orders to frighten the populace for their own advantage. He covers a variety of scientific curiosities and marvels (optical, auditory, chemical, mechanical, atmospheric, etc.), providing logical reasoning to counter superstition. In this new edition, philosopher John Alexander Smith has created introductory chapters and additional notes on the phenomena of natural magic. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally smart, with a little bumping to the extremities and some wear the head and tail of the spine, with a couple of losses to the tail of the spine. Internally, the binding is strained between pages 184 and 201, with a gathering of pages starting to come loose. Pages are bright and clean. Good . Ill.: Not Stated. Good .
