A collection of Neapolitan fairy tales from the fourteenth, fifteenth, and sixteenth centuries, originally written and published by Giovanni Battista Basile in 1634 to 1636. The Pentamerone ("Five Days") is an anthology of fairy tales, comprising of fifty fairy tales told by ten narrators in the course of five days. This work follows the steps of Giovanni Boccaccio's Decameron, but it deals with different themes in a different writing style. Translated by Richard F. Burton, noted English writer, explorer, and translator. Among his most well-known translations is The Arabian Nights. The first trade edition, part of a limited edition publication of only 165 copies, of which this copy is number 94. Complete in two volumes. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, sound, with some shelf wear and bumping to the head and tail of the spines and extremities. Light fading to the cloth at the extremities and spine on Volume I. A small puncture to the cloth on the front joint of Volume II. Small ink initials of a previous owner to the front pastedown of Volume II. Internally, both volumes firmly bound. A few spots to the endpapers, otherwise pages are bright and clean. Very Good .
